Career Trek’s Learning Model is based upon sound career development theory and practice. It is the model that Career Trek uses as a general guide when producing its career development programs.
Career Trek’s four-step learning model propels children and youth through progressively more challenging and enriching stages of education and career development learning.
Our experiential learning model is based on the belief that doing hands-on career-related tasks produces participants that are engaged and invested.
Each step is based upon one-of-four recognized career development support stages. Each step provides children and youth with the developmentally sound foundation they need to progress on to the next stage of their career journey.
At each step of the model, participants are introduced to a process doing, learning, and assessing. We call this the Career Trek Process, and it helps transform children into adaptable adults with a love of learning.
Self-Awareness: Grades 5 and 6
In Step One children are introduced to careers and are encouraged to reflect on their experiences. At this stage our programming helps participants to discover their options and their likes and dislikes. Children become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and use this knowledge to begin thinking about the future.
Career Trek’s Wonder of Work (Winnipeg), Wonder of Work (Westman), Children Rising (Parkland), and Children Rising (NORMAN) are Step One programs.
Career Exploration: Grades 7 and 8
In Step Two children are in the career exploration phase. At this stage programming should help children to begin matching interests and aptitudes to occupation and career choices.
Career Trek is currently exploring program model options for a permanent Step Two Career Exploration program.
Career Discovery: Grades 9 and 10
In Step Three youth need to begin zeroing in on occupations that are in line with their interests and abilities. At this stage Career Trek provides participants with the option to do a focused study project on one of twelve occupations.
Career Trek’s Get Ready to Work! program is a Step Three program.
Preparedness & Preparation: Grades 11 and 12
In Step Four participants are encouraged to prepare for their transition out of high school and on to a post-secondary or training institution. At this stage our programming takes youth and puts them into positions of increasing authority where they get to help Career Trek staff deliver programming, mentor participants, and gain employment experience.
Career Trek’s Junior Staff Mentorship Program is a Step Four program.
Career Trek’s learning model is designed to provide participants with the supports they need at critical turning points in their career journeys, supports that will help to ease the transition from school to work.
