Why is Career Trek Important?

Thank you so much for this life changing experience. It has helped us to understand and focus and plan academically for Claire’s future and my younger daughters. I wish everyone could have this experience. A true gift. – Wonder of Work Family

Why is Career Trek important?

Career Trek is important because it gives children and youth the tools they need to deal with an uncertain future. High youth unemployment, fast paced technological change, greater competition for jobs, and the need for increasingly skilled employees all make the future labour market challenging. Researchers and governments try to anticipate the jobs of the future in order to help people prepare. However, it’s important to realize that predicting the future with any certainty is impossible.

Helping children accumulate the employment skills, awareness, and adaptability they need, is not. Career Trek helps children gain employability skills, confidence, and the ability to assess themselves and their environment, allowing them to be flexible and adjust their skills to meet the needs of an ever-changing economy.

With the challenges facing students today, life-long learning—and the adaptability it provides—is the key to continuous employment. With Career Trek, children develop the tools they need to safely navigate their career paths.

I thought it’d be nice to go to a school where I can do aerospace every single day, I’m 100% sure this is what I’m wanting to do in my career and why not start early! I also wanted to sincerely thank you for having me in the aerospace program, it was the best 22 weeks in my life, it really changed my career path (IN A GOOD WAY) and I’m super excited for this opportunity to go to Tec Voc! – Get Ready to Work! The Importance of Post-Secondary Education or Apprenticeship Training

You simply can’t overstate the importance of post-secondary education or training. By some estimates, 77 per cent of Canada’s workforce will require a post-secondary education by the year 2031.

For the children of today to take advantage of the economic opportunities of tomorrow, a post-secondary education is becoming a must.

People with post-secondary education or apprenticeship training have significantly lower unemployment rates. The employment rate for people with a post-secondary education is almost 30 percentage points higher than those without (82 per cent to 55 per cent).

As having a post-secondary education becomes more important, it also becomes more important to recognize that not every occupation has the same rate of employment. Families must carefully assess their child’s strengths, interests, and passions but must also be knowledgeable of labour market trends.

By increasing children’s exposure to—and comfort level with—post-secondary institutions, Career Trek is laying the foundation for smooth transitions into higher education and the world of work.

If it wasn’t for Career Trek I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t have gone into Education. While I was an instructor I discovered my passion for teaching and decided to apply. I really credit Career Trek for my success. If I was not an instructor in the program I would not be an Educator today. Career Trek has played a monumental role in my life. – Instructor
