On September 23, Career Trek celebrated National Tree Day with the folks from Kapabamayak Achaak Healing Forest. This was a beautiful event that brought together Elders, Residential School Survivors, community and students, blending teachings from both and Indigenous and western world views.
Career Trek is committed to and is doing the work in the space of Truth and Reconciliation. National Tree Day provided an opportunity to do some of this work – Elders and community shared their knowledge, trees were planted to support the continuous growth of Kapabamayak Achaak, and students participated in hands-on career exploration. This event also reminded us about the “why” behind Career Trek: to plant the seeds (or in this case, the trees) of knowledge and possibility in the minds of young people, in order to build a better future for our province.
We were so fortunate to have Kimberley Levasseur Puhach emcee the event, and to hear from Elder Val Vint and her drum group, MLA Nahanni Fontaine, MLA Sarah Guillemard, MLA Dougald Lamont, City Councillor Sherri Rollins, and a representative from MP Kevin Lamoureux’s office.

The world has changed significantly since the World Health Organization announced a global pandemic on March 11th, 2020. COVID-19 has disrupted every aspect of our lives, including the ways in which we conduct ourselves and do business.
As a result of this disruption, businesses, organizations and society must pivot to create and innovate in order to remain relevant in what is becoming a wide-spread virtual reality. Career Trek is not immune to this new reality and as a result, we have been preparing to deliver the same engaging, impactful programming we always have, while following recommended health regulations. We plan to shift part of our service delivery model online, using a combination of online platforms along with apps and software programs that best suit our needs, ensuring the best possible learning experience for our participants.
Career Trek is looking at this moment in time as one of immense opportunity, for the organization and for program participants. Not only will Career Trek be able to continue to provide high quality, high impact programming, we will develop new and better ways to do so and expand the potential of the Wonder of Work program across regions and participants.
Career Trek is preparing options for virtual and hybrid approaches. Should in-person delivery become a possibility, the hybrid model would combine in-person and virtual resources. With post-secondary institutions being closed to on-campus activities this fall, we’ve been in discussion with a variety of partners to make arrangements for in-person programming: high schools, community and youth centres, and friendship centres.
With respect to in-person programming, Career Trek is taking time to consider the revisions required for our activities and lessons to ensure safety protocols are adhered to such as: smaller group sizes, limiting close contact of participants in our activities, and reducing the amount of shared supplies.
This new approach will allow us to engage more participants throughout the province through online lessons, including lessons that can be completed in a classroom, or at home, to supplement Manitoba curriculum outcomes and support recovery learning. During this time of immense stress and uncertainty, Career Trek would like to take a moment to thank all individuals who are working tirelessly on the frontlines to ensure we are safe and remain healthy. Thank you to every individual involved in our healthcare system, in our emergency and essential services; thank you to the grocery store staff, to truck drivers; to business owners using their facilities to meet the demands and create much needed supplies for our hospitals and emergency personnel. Thank you.
As we enter the fourth week of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Career Trek offices in Winnipeg, Brandon and The Pas will remain closed until further notice. However, we at Career Trek are still very active and working from our homes as we use this time to plan and prepare for the next stage of our programs and organization.
We have also taken some very exciting steps to further grow and develop our organization. Recently, we welcomed Allison Kirkland as our new Director of Programs. Previously Allison filled the role as Program Manager, Winnipeg Region and brings vast experience with programming at a multitude of non-profits in Winnipeg. We also added Kyle Mason as our new Director of Development. Kyle brings nearly twenty years of non-profit management and fundraising experience to this new role, as he leads our efforts in growing public awareness and general support. We are very excited to have Allison and Kyle join our amazing team of gifted staff as we take Career Trek to new heights.
With a pause in our current programming, Career Trek staff – both full-time and part-time – are using the time to develop online activities related to career exploration that we are posting on our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Staff are taking a deep dive into our programming and curriculum – updating training material, creating and updating lessons; and we are making plans to continue the work we started to expand programs to other regions in the province. While we are unsure at this point if we can resume any of our programs, rest assured we will be ready for our regular program launch in the fall.
We continue to monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19 and are making decisions about our offices and programming based on new information from our public health officials.

Career Trek is thrilled to announce that Allison Kirkland has accepted the position of Director of Programming. Kirkland was most recently Career Trek’s Program Manager, Winnipeg Region, and comes with numerous non-profit programming experience.
“After having been at Career Trek for the last year, I fully understand the importance of what we do and am looking forward to being a part of continuing to develop excellent programming and growth of the organization,” said Allison Kirkland.
As both an entrepreneur and non-profit leadership professional, Kirkland has a track record of developing and delivering high quality, high impact programs, online and in-person, to thousands of people across Canada. Whether it’s behind the scenes or face to face, her work has always been grounded in creating connections between people, programs and ideas.
“Allison brought so much experience to the role as Program Manger, I am certain she is the perfect fit to lead the entire programming team. I am looking forward to Allison being a part of our Senior Management team,” said Rhonda Taylor, Career Trek CEO.

Career Trek is thrilled to announce that Kyle Mason has been hired on as the Director of Development. Mason has spent much of his career leading various non-profits. During his career, he has also lead development teams that have raised millions of dollars in private donations.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Career Trek community and am looking forward to what can be done in this role. I know the amazing work Career Trek does and am proud to be a part of future growth,” said Mason.
Having most recently launched Kyle J. Mason consulting, Mason comes to Career Trek with much experience empowering organizations and is also a noted speaker across the province.
Mason has built his career on creating strengths-based community development, where the community is involved in the organizations growth.
“Kyle is coming to Career Trek with so much experience, we’re lucky to have him. I’m looking forward to working with him and am certain he was the ideal person to help with our success,” said Rhonda Taylor, Career Trek CEO.

Although it now seems ages ago, Career Trek was invited to take part in Fast Pitch Winnipeg through the Winnipeg Foundation on February 26, 2020 and competed against 11 other incredible charities for the chance to win $26,000.
The Winnipeg Foundation’s Fast Pitch is a coaching program to help build the capacity of, and create visibility for, Winnipeg’s charitable sector. Fast Pitch is part of an international movement that helps organizations create powerful, high-energy cases for support, delivered in three minutes or less!
Every presenter spent several weeks with coaches working on perfecting their pitch and making sure every second of their three minutes was used to its fullest.
Career Trek’s CEO, Rhonda Taylor, took to the stage and shared the story of Alicia, one of the young moms in our M Program. You can watch her 3-minute pitch below.
Every charity walked away with a cheque for $1,500 from the Winnipeg Foundation. Each organization did an incredible job of showcasing the important work they do in our city. The night ended with the panel of judges selecting four winners. A huge congratulations to the winners of the night.
The evening’s prize winning Showcase pitches were:
- Grand Prize ($10,000) – Snowflake Place for Children and Youth Inc.
- People’s Choice ($6,000) – Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad Inc.
- 1st Runner Up ($6,000) – Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba
- 2nd Runner Up ($4,000) – The WRENCH

We’re closely monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation in terms of our programming while keeping your health and safety a top priority as always.
Career Trek has made the decision to cancel our programming and events starting immediately and continuing until after Easter.
We recognize that there is much uncertainty at this time and since it is an evolving situation, we will be providing you with further updates and new information as it becomes available.

She used Career Trek for her research because she wanted to know if “intrinsic factors identified as influential to improving social integration be influenced by quality career exploration programs such as Career Trek?” So she was looking at whether or not career exploration programs like Career Trek, help unify people with disabilities into the workforce.
